What are some of the signs and basics of a concussion and how can we help?

Concussion Basics & Treatment

A concussion refers to an injury that alters how cells in the brain perform their functions, generally caused by a blow or trauma to the head that causes the brain to move around quickly within the skull. Even mild bumps here can cause concussions, and concussions can happen even when someone doesn’t directly hit their head.

Concussions have a reputation for taking place within sports, but while this is indeed often the case, it’s far from the only location where this can happen. Concussions happen due to falls, vehicle accidents, playground mishaps and numerous other traumas.

In most cases, concussion symptoms will show up within 24-48 hours of the actual impact sustained. If you notice such a blow to the head in someone, take note of their behavior and physical movements to see if you notice major changes. Signs of a concussion include:

  • Confusion or uncertainty
  • Moving clumsily or slowly
  • Answering questions or otherwise speaking slowly or in a slurred fashion
  • Losing consciousness, even momentarily
  • Irritability and changes in behavior
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Weak or numb arms or legs

In the case of several of these more severe symptoms, including losing consciousness, vomiting, having seizures or noticing weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, medical attention should be sought at once.

How Our Salt Lake City Chiropractors Can Help

At Apollo Chiropractic, we have a number of different treatments that can help with concussions and their symptoms. Our pain management and physical therapy techniques can help with a wide range of concussion symptoms, including headaches, pain, dizziness and others. We can also help with neural calming and relaxation, often important factors for reducing pain and limiting overall symptoms.

Over time, we can use our various therapies and therapeutic exercises to target the most significant symptoms. We can use massage therapy to help you relax during the recovery process, which can vary pretty widely in terms of length and hassle – being relaxed and pain-free can be very important during this process.
