Reducing Travel Pain: Car Travel Chiropractor Tips

While the year 2020 limited travel for many people based on societal conditions, 2021 has allowed many people to get back to at least similar levels of travel they’ve typically enjoyed. For those who deal with back pain, neck pain or other related concerns, however, this also means it’s important to renew your stretching and preparation routines to ensure discomfort doesn’t become a concern during travel.

At Apollo Chiropractic, our chiropractic care services, massage therapy solutions and other programs all help patients limit their pain risks in several areas. We’ve assisted many clients who are looking to decrease or even eliminate pain during any form of travel, from our in-person treatments to many tips and themes we may offer to patients that will assist them during their travel itself. During this two-part blog series, we’ll go over some general chiropractor stretches and other recommendations for travel — part one will focus on those traveling by car for a long road trip, while part two will speak to people traveling by plane.

Seat Adjustment

One of the simplest concepts for reducing pain risks while traveling in a car: Making sure your seat is adjusted to the ideal setting. Your seat should be at a height that allows you to easily put your feet on the floor while supporting the natural curve of your back. That seat should also be able to tilt forward enough for you to relax and stretch out while still allowing some control over the steering wheel itself, if you’re driving.

Seatbelt and Headrest

Your seatbelt should always be worn for obvious safety reasons, but also because it supports you as you sleep or relax during your trip. Make sure the headrest is adjusted to support your spine and allow you to lean forward and rest on it as needed, but also that it doesn’t cause you some discomfort by putting unnecessary pressure directly on your neck or any other part of your body.

Leg Positioning

People often fail to think about the position of their legs and feet while traveling in a car, but it can affect their overall comfort and well-being. If you’re not able to put your feet flat on the floor, adjust your seat or provide some other support to stretch out your legs. Make sure that your feet are also never under any pressure from sharp angles — such as the gas or brake pedals — as this can also cause irritation and other related issues.

Frequent Stops and Stretching

Regular stops should be made during any long trip to stretch out your muscles, communicate with the driver and ensure you have enough time to use the restroom. You don’t want to feel uncomfortable or in pain because of holding your position for a long period of time, so taking this step is often one of the most important steps anyone can do when preparing for their travel.

In addition, you can even stretch your muscles while seated in the car. There are many calf, thigh and glute stretches that will benefit your entire body; speak to your chiropractor to learn more about these.
