Ergonomic Workstations: Keyboard, Height, Movement

In part one of this two-part blog series, we looked at some chiropractor tips on how patients can utilize ergonomic workstation features to improve things like posture, back pain and more. More and more office spaces are being outfitted with these sorts of items, which allow employees to work in more comfortable ways that not only limit pain risks, but may also lead to increased happiness and productivity.

How Keyboard and Mouse are Positioned

While part one of our series went over themes like chairs and monitors, another thing to consider is the positioning of your keyboard and mouse. Keeping these items at a height that is comfortable for you will ensure you’re not overreaching or putting too much strain on your wrists when working.

Additionally, be sure to keep them close enough together so you can quickly switch between them without moving too far away from either one. If you feel like the area isn’t spacious enough, consider investing in an ergonomic keyboard or a vertical mouse to allow for more room.

Desk Height

Another key element of an ergonomic workspace is the height of your desk. While most desks are set up for a standing position, you can also opt for a sit-stand desk that allows you to easily adjust it from sitting to standing and vice versa. This can be especially helpful if you plan on alternating between these positions throughout the day.

In addition, remember to adjust it so that your arms and wrists are on the same level as the desktop, which will help avoid any strain when typing.

Plenty of Daily Movement

No matter how perfectly you’re able to optimize your workstation, it’s important to remember that sitting still in an office chair all day isn’t the most healthy thing you can do for your body. Make sure to take regular breaks and move around periodically throughout the day, especially if you’re spending hours at a time at your desk.
